This school bus driver cartoon reminded me of the first time I rode along with another school bus driver while I was in safety training.
We all have heard
kids talk about the “Crazy School Bus Driver”. I can honestly say I understand that statement quite well. This driver was crazy. I think an accident waiting to happen. His name is Hank.
When the kids were getting off the school bus I heard some of them make comments to the driver like “Hey … only jumped 3 curbs this morning.”
Another was, “You made it here in record time.”
One even said, “Thanks.”
Even I was a little quezzy when I got off. Yet, the kids seemed to just love him. It was obvious they respected him. And he loved and respected them. The students didn’t act like the typical middle-schoolers. Hank told me he has had the route for almost 8 years and wouldn’t give it up for anything.
He was the kind of guy everyone loved. He had lost his wife a few years ago and I believe he needed those kids in his life. He knew most of them by first name. His only advise to me was simple advise … “Just be a good guy and make sure they know where the line in the sand is drawn.”
I always keep that advise in mind when ever a new school bus driver asks for some advise.
You know … remembering what that day was like with Hank and his kids I can only think he might be a little crazy. But a different kind of crazy … he was crazy about his job and crazy about his kids.
By the way … come to find out his driver record is spotless.
